Ocular Nutrition

Ocular nutrition means eating the foods which support that supports eye health and avoiding the foods that increase or help create the onset of several different eye diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and glaucoma. It also means that proper ocular nutrition can arrest or reverse one or more of these conditions in some cases, or slow down its progression. In addition to eating correctly it means adopting the proper life style and taking nutritional supplements created for this purpose.

Ocular nutrition supplements

Certain components appear in many supplements designed for ocular nutrition. One supplement which has recently come to public attention is lutein.

Lutein is lutein regardless of who manufactures it. It is the amount of lutein the is more important than the brand. Amounts differ for prevention and for treatment. For example, Ocucel and FloraGLO are just manufacturers' trade names for their products featuring lutein. Lutein is a carotenoid, which is a class of antioxidants. Dr. Geiger prefers DaVinci's "Healthy Eyes" which has all of the necessary vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to support eye health and in so doing, delaying or preventing the onset of several different eye diseases including those mentioned above.

Prevention

Dr. Geiger has authored a book, Eye Care Naturally, in which he makes recommendations for alternatives to help those with macular degeneration.

In it he advises which foods to eat, which to avoid and which nutritional supplements, ie omega-3 fish oil, to take for a number of eye conditions. He also speaks of some necessary lifestyle changes to be made. His research has uncovered how to prevent, prolong the onset, slow the progression of and in some cases, reverse these conditions. Some of these conditions have no medical cure and lead to blindness. For others, surgery is the only option. Dr. Geiger says otherwise.
